Spite and Malice requires you to play off all your "payoff pile" cards, or more than anyone else.
The Cards:
Two 52-card decks plus their four jokers. Kings are high and Aces are low.
How to Play:
In Spite and Malice the two players sit across from each other. Shuffle all four jokers with one of the decks; to create a shared draw pile. Shuffle and divide the other deck equally so each player has a face-down 26-card payoff pile.
Turn over the top card of your payoff pile. The player who has the lower card deals a five card hand from the draw pile to each player. Non dealer plays first in Spite and Malice.
At each turn you must play any Aces you have in hand or on your payoff pile to the center of the table. These Aces start the "center stacks."
You may make any, all, or none of the other possible plays. Play a card from your hand onto one or more of your own side stacks. Each card added must either be the same rank as the top card on the pile or one rank lower (any 5 on any 6). You can move the top card from a side stack, either onto another side stack or start a new side stack. You can play a card from your hand, your payoff pile, or your side stacks onto the center stacks. You can play a 2 on an Ace, a 3 on a 2, a 4 on a 3, and so forth, upward to the King. In Spite and Malice suit does not matter.
Before starting your turn, draw cards from the draw pile to replace cards you’ve played, keep five cards in your hands at all times. Play until you can’t make another move. If you choose not to just say, "that’s it," and it’s your opponent’s turn.
When a center stack is built up to the king, shuffle all 13 cards in with the remaining draw cards.
Jokers:
A Joker stands for any card except an Ace. You can play Joker cards onto the shared center piles or onto your own side stacks.
Spite and Malice Bonus Turns:
If you play all five cards from your hand at once, you get an extra turn. Take five new cards from the draw pile and continue playing.
If nobody can or will make a play, the game is blocked. When Spite and Malice is blocked, you must make any obvious plays that your opponent requests.
Rules for Scoring:
The player who "goes out" (plays off the whole payoff pile) scores the number of cards left in their opponent’s payoff pile plus a 10-point bonus. In a blocked game, whoever has the least payoff pile cards scores the difference, with no bonus. Play to 25 points, or to a agreed number.
Tips:
In Spite and Malice goal is to always try to play off your top payoff card. It’s well worth spending a Joker or two to get to it. Make things difficult for your opponent by trying to build center side stacks just past the payoff pile card your opponent currently has showing.
Start your side stacks with high cards, giving yourself more room to build downward. You can play cards from the same rank to the side stacks, eventually it becomes harder to empty such piles. Sequential piles play right off onto center stacks.
Some Spite and Malice variations let you play only one card in any turn to a side stack. Others don’t allow layoffs in sequence and you must alternate between red and black cards.
For Spite and Malice some players don’t take a bonus turn for playing out all five cards from the hand or else, the bonus is allowed only if all five cards are played into the center.
In Spite and Malice you can play blocked games out by collecting all cards except for those still in the payoff pile. Shuffle this whole bundle together, deal five cards each, and resume play.
