Q


Queen:
Next highest card to a king in most games, but of special importance in certain games, as described under those heads.
Quick trick:
A high card holding in Bridge, promising a fast win.
Quint:
A sequence of five cards in Piquet.

R


Raise:
Bid higher or add chips to a pot.
Rake-off:
A share of pots taken by a gambling house or a dealer.
Ramsch:
A term for "nullo" in Skat.
Rank:
Relative value of a card.
Rebid:
A new bid by a former bidder.
Redeal:
A hand dealt over again by the same dealer. In Solitaires, dealing through the discard pile as a new pack; or gathering cards from the layout and dealing them in new order.
Redouble:
To double a double in Bridge.
Re-entrant:
Player who comes back into a game to replace a loser.
Re-entry:
A card used by a player to regain the lead in Bridge.
Reject:
A form of "nullo" in Dutch Whist.
Renege:
Failure to follow suit or play a required card.
Renounce:
Discard on the suit led.
Reserve:
A special pile of cards dealt in some forms of Solitaire.
Response:
Support for a partner’s bid in Bridge.
Revoke:
The same as renege.
Ride along:
Keep calling bets in Poker.
Riffle:
A shuffle in which the ends of the pack are interlaced.
Right bower:
The jack of trumps, when highest trump, us in Euchre.
Rob:
Exchange a card for a turned-up trump.
Rob the pack:
To take cards from the pack to replace those in the hand.
Roodlcs:
A round of Poker hands with stakes increased by agreement.
Round:
A series of hands in which everybody deals.
Round game:
A game without partners and with a variable number of players.
Roundhouse:
Meld of four kings and four queens in Pinochle for 240 points.
Round the corner straight:
An optional Poker hand in which an ace is both low and high in a sequence, a 2-A­K-Q-J.
Round trip:
Same as roundhouse in Pinochle. Row Cards dealt side by side in Solitaire.
Royale:
A holding of K, Q, J of one suit in Trenta-Cinque.
Royal flush:
The A-K-Q-J-10 of the same suit, an unbeatable hand in standard Poker when wild cards are barred.
Royal marriage:
King and queen of trump in Pinochle, scoring 40 points.
Royals:
A fifth suit in special packs of cards, with crowns as symbols. Similar to eagles.
Royal sequence:
A trump sequence, A-10-K-Q4 in Pinochle.
Royal straight flush:
Same as a royal flush in Poker.
Rubber:
Best of three games in Bridge or Whist.
Rubicon:
To be beaten before reaching a required score; similar to lurch.
Ruff:
To trump a lead from another suit
Rule of eleven:
A mathematical rule that if a player leads his fourth highest card, in Bridge or Whist, subtraction of its value from eleven reveals the number of cards of that suit in the remaining hands. Example: Player leads the C27. He will have three higher hearts; the other players will have four higher hearts among them.
Rule of fourth highest:
A customary lead from the longest suit in a Bridge hand.
Rummy:
Dispose of the final card in a Rummy hand; also to lay down a matched hand all at once.
Run:
A sequence of three or more cards in Cribbage or Rummy; or a trump sequence in Pinochle.
