O


Odd trick: One that gives a player or team a majority.
Once around: A Cribbage game for 61 points instead of 121.
One pair: The lowest Poker combination, as j-j or 8-8.
Open: To make the first bet or first bid; also the first lead.
Open-end straignt: In Poker, a bobtail straight, or four cards in sequence, as 10-9-8-7, but not ot the same suit.
Openers: Cards needed to open a Poker pot, as a pair of jacks or better.
Opening bid: The first lead after hands are dealt.
Open poker: Any type of Poker in which cards are dealt face up; chiefly Stud Poker.
Opponent: An opposing dealer; particularly the nondealer in a two-handed game.
Option: A form of High-Low Five-Cards stud Poker.
Option: A form of High-Low Five-Card Stud Poker.
Order it up: In Euchre, the nondealer’s acceptance of the turned-up card as trump, said card going to dealer.
Ordinary suit: Any nontrump suit.
Original bidder: The player making the first bid, or the first bid for his team.
Original hand: A hand as first dealt.
Overbid: Bid too high to win.
Overcall: Bid higher than the previous bid.
Overhand shuffle: To draw off groups of cards with one hand and throw the rest on top with the other, like a series of rapid cuts.
Overruff: The same as overtrump.
Overtrick: One more than needed to win, particularly in Bridge.
Overtrump: To play a higher trump on a trick already trumped.

Pack: All the cards used in a game.
Packet: A portion of the pack.
Paint: To force a on an opponent in Hearts.
Pair: Two cards of the same value, especially in Poker.
Pairs royal: Three cards of the same value in Cribbage.
Pam: The J in Loo.
Pan: A popular term for Panguingue.
Partner: A member of a team of two and sometimes more players.
Pass: To refuse to bid, also to exchange cards with another player.
Pass and back in: In Poker, the privilege of passing and coming back in the game later.
Pass out: To pass and drop from the betting in Poker.
Pat hand: A Poker hand that cannot be improved by a draw.
Pedro: The five of trump in Pedro.
Peg: To score points on a Cribbage board.
Pelter: The same as kilter; also an occasional term for skeet.
Penny ante: A Poker game with a one-cent limit.
Picture card: A face card.
Pink lady: The Q when given special penalty value in Hearts.
Pinochle: A meld of J and Q for 40 points.
Pip: A spot on a playing card.
Plain suit: Any nontrump suit.
Play: Put a card on a trick.
Player: Active participant in a card game.
Play off: Preventing an opponent from scoring in Cribbage.
Play on: Inviting an opponent to score in Cribbage in hope of going him one better.
Point: Scoring unit in various games.
Point count: A system of evaluating bids in Bridge.
Point value: The number of points a counter card is worth.
Pone: Nondealer in a two-handed game; the dealer’s opponent.
Pontoon: A nickname for Twenty-one.
Pool: Common fund of chips or tokens.
Post-mortem: Analysis of a hand or deal after it has been played.
Pot: A term for a pool, consisting of chips or tokens. In Canasta, the  pozo  or discard pile.
Pozo: The discard pile in Canasta.
Pre-empt: To bid so high that the opponents are unable to overbid, particularly in Bridge.
Pre-emptive bid: One preventing the opposing team from bidding.
Premium: A bonus paid to high winning hands; in Bridge, any scores registered above the line.
Prize pot: A canasta discard pile containing a wild card.
Prussian Whist: A variant of Whist in which a card is cut from another pack to establish trump.
Psychic bid: An unconventional bid in Contract Bridge, intended to deceive the opposing team.
Punto: The fourth highest card, when a red ace in Ombre or Quadrille.
Push Poker:A common term for Take It or Leave It.
