I
Immortal hand: An unbeatable hand.
Improve: To better a hand by a draw in Poker.
Incorrect pack: Any pack that is short of necessary cards or that contains any extra cards.
Index: The corner of a playing card that shows value and suit.
Indifferent card: A card that is of no use to a hand.
Informatory double: In Bridge, a false double that notifies the partner as to the bidder’s holding.
Initial bid: An opening bid.
Inside straight: A Poker hand containing four cards toward a straight, but with an in-between value missing, as 10-8-7-6, which needs a 9 for a straight.
Insufficient bid: Any bid lower than a previous bid.
In the hole: A minus score, particularly when so indicated by drawing a circle around it is as a "hole." Also, in Stud Poker, any card dealt face downward.
Invitation bid: A bid in Bridge that encourages but does not compel partner to bid higher.
Invite: To lead a low card of the longest suit in Bridge.
Irregularity: A slight or careless infraction of the rules of a game, often condoned by other players.
Irregular lead: Any lead at variance with formal procedure, as in vertain trump games.
J
Jack: A face card, usually outranked by the king and queen but given a higher rating in certain games. In Pitch, a point scored for taking the jack of trump during play.
Jeux de regla: Hands that give mathematical advantages in Ecarte.
Joker: An extra card added to the pack of fifty-two and given special rating, often as the highest trump, and termed the "best bower" in Five Hundred. Two or more jokers are used in some games.
Jump bid: A bid going beyond conventional requirements in Bridge.
