Glossary


G


Game: Any card game or the points or tricks required to win it. In Pitch. a scoring point dependent on taking counter cards, or, in some variants, the ten or trump.
Gift: In All Fours, a point given to the opponent by the dealer, when the latter is allowed to name the trump and does so.
Gin: Short for Gin Rummy. Also, a gin rummy hand melded without deadwood.
Go: A chance to score one or two special points in Cribbage.
Go down: In trump games, failure to make a bid, with the corresponding loss in score; in Rummy, to place leftover cards from the hand face up on the table.
Go out: In many games, to take enough tricks or points to win. In Rummy and Canasta, to meld or lay down all the cards still in a hand.
Go over: To make a higher bid or play a higher card.
Go rummy: To meld an entire Rummy hand all at once.
Goulash: A nickname for Sixty-four card Pinochle.
Grand pinochle: The K, Q and J when scored as 80 points in Pinochle.
Grand slam: Taking all thirteen tricks in Bridge.
Group: In Rummy, three or four cards of the same value.
Guarantee: One of the bids in Six-Bid Solo.
Guards: In Bridge, low cards protecting those of higher value.
Gucki: A type of bid in Skat.
Gucki grand: A type of bid in Skat.

H


Hand: Cards dealt to a player; or the player himself. Also used as the equivalent of "deal."
Hands as games: Scoring each hands as a game in Pinochle and in other games.
Hearts triple: In Pinochle, a special rule giving triple value to a bid in hearts.
Help: Any bid that enables a partner to bid higher; or any hand that provides needed strength for a partner’s play.
High: In Pitch, the highest card dealt; also, a point scored for holding it. In many games, the highest card played on a trick. In Poker, the highest hand.
High card: In Poker, the highest card in a hand that contains no pair or anything better.
His heels: A jack truned up as "starter" in Cribbage.
His nobs: The jack of the same suit as the "starter" in Cribbage.
Hit: To deal a player another card in Blackjack.
Hock: Term for the final card in a Faro deal.
Holding: The cards composing a player’s hand.
Hole card: Any card dealt face down in Stud Poker.
Honors: The top five trumps (A K Q J 10) in Whist; the same in Bridge, but including the four aces in no-trump.
Honor tricks: Special combinations of high cards used in evaluating a hand in Bridge.
House rules: Special rules applying to games as played in gambling houses.
Howell settlement: A way of scoring in Hearts. Each player counts the hearts he has taken, multiplies it by the number of opponents, and puts that many chips into a pool. He then subtracts his hearts from thirteen and takes back that many chips.
Hoyle: A standard reference work on card games.
Hundred aces: A Pinochle meld of 100 points for four aces of different suits.
