Gin Rummy rules requires you to meld your cards as quickly as possible by matching cards in your hand into sets of three cards or runs of three or more.
Sets (cards of the same rank)
Runs (cards arranged in sequence)
The Cards:
A standard 52 card hoyle deck is used. Aces are always low.
Gin Rummy Rules For How to Play:
Draw a high card to choose who will be the dealer. Deal out ten cards to every player. Dealer turns the next card face up to start a discard pile; put the excess cards face down by the up card to make the stock.
The opponent starts play by taking the card that is face up (and discarding a card) or by refusing it. The dealer's opponent gets the first chance to refuse the top card. If opponent of dealer refuses the card, dealer has the chance to take the face up card or refuse it. If both refuse the face up card, opponent of dealer takes the top card from the stock and then discards a card.
The two players take turns, grab the top discard if it fits with the cards in your hand or draw from the stock, and discard a card. In Gin Rummy rules the rule is that laying off is not permitted when gin is reached.
Knocking Strategy:
If you "Knock" discard cards face down and claim "knock." You lay down all the melds in your hand, including "deadwood" (means unmatched cards) separate. Gin Rummy rules for deadwood points added together can’t be more than 10 points. Your opponent may lay off deadwood on your melds.
Melding requires all cards in hand. If your opponent can’t lay off any deadwood on the melds you have. Winner or loser deals next. When there are two cards left in the stock, play stops and the deal is thrown and no one scores points. Gin Rummy rules dealer redeals. Knocking is allowed only when you have ten or less deadwood points.
Scoring Gin Rummy Directions:
Face cards count 10 points each (K, Q, J), and other cards are scored by the face value. If someone gets a Gin they get a 25 point bonus plus the value of deadwood in their opponent’s hand. If you knock, you score the difference of your deadwood from your opponent’s deadwood after laying off.
Gin Rummy Rules For Undercuts:
If you knock and your Gin opponent’s left over deadwood is lower or equal to your’s, you score a 25 point bonus (bonus may vary) for the undercut, and the point difference. The first player to get 100 points wins the game.
