Auction Pitch Rules

Game Objective:

Auction Pitch rules (Setback) requires you to score points by winning cards in tricks. The four points to be won are the hand holding high trump for the deal, the hand holding low trump for the deal, the trick taking the Jack of trump, and "gamed" the high card count total in tricks taken. There are a number of versions of Pitch. This version requires two to eight players.

The Cards:

A regular pack of 52 cards is used. Aces are high; however, 10s are the highest-scoring cards.

How To Play:

Each player Auction Pitch rules (Setback) gets six cards. The rest of the cards are unneeded. Start with non dealer, each player bids once for the right to choose the trump suit. The bids are from weakest to strongest, two, three, and four. To bid dealer must out bid non dealer, both may "pass". If both pass, throw the cards in and deal a new hand.

High bidder decides the trump suit by leading a card of that suit to the first trick. This is the "Pitch." Follow suit if a trump card is led. In Auction Pitch rules (Setback) if another suit is led you may play a trump even if you are able to follow suit. You can’t discard unless you are able to follow suit. Tricks are won by the higher trump, if the trick has no trump, it is won by the higher card. Winner leads to the next trick.

Rules For Scoring:

When the six tricks are played, score each hand.

High trump 1
Low trump 1
Jack of trumps 1
Each ace 4
Each king 3
Each queen 2
Each 10 10

The points for high and low trump card are each awarded to the player who has the card, not the player who took the card in a trick. The point for jack of trumps (if the card was present) goes to the player who took it in a trick. In Auction Pitch rules (Setback) whoever has takes the higher card count in tricks earns 1 point for game (in a tie, neither wins the point).

Each player scores the number of points earned on the deal. The bidder must score at least the number bid or else is "set back" (loses) that amount. In Auction Pitch rules (Setback) the first player to reach 11 wins (or a agreed upon number, for example 7, 13, or 21).

Auction Pitch Rules (Setback) Tips:

When you hold three or more trumps, it’s unlikely that your opponent has more than two. It’s often wise to "draw" opponent’s trumps by continuing to lead them. Remember, opponent is free to play a trump card instead of following suit.
