All Fours

All Fours card game is sometimes called Seven Up, Old Sledge, or High-Low Jack.

Number of Players:

All Fours card game is played with two to four players, if played with four players, play is played in partnerships. Partners sit opposite each other.

Objective Rules:

The goal is to build a trick winning hand and score more points than your opponent.

The name Seven Up is derived from the fact that it takes seven points to win. Deal hands of six cards to each player, the next card is turned up and placed on top of the stock. If it is a jack, dealer scores one point.

The All Fours card game non-dealer examines his hand and determines if the upturned card is a good trump suit. If it is, he ’stands’, and trumps are set. If he it is not, he ’begs’, passing the decision to the dealer, who must either give his opponent a point to let the trump stand, or deal three new cards each and turn over another card. If the suit is the same, the process is repeated until a new trump agreed. The last card can’t be turned for trumps, and if the pack is gone the players start the game again.

Once trumps is set, each player discards as many cards as necessary, face down, to be left with a hand of six. Tricks are now played for and one point is won for each of the following:

The name All Fours card game comes from the fact that there are four points that can be scored.

Points:

High: The players dealt the highest trump in play.
Low: The player dealt the lowest trump in play.
Jack: Whoever wins the jack of trumps in a trick (unless the dealer the dealer turned it over for the trump decider).
Game: Highest total of point values for cards taken in tricks.

In All Fours card game values are ace 4, king 3, queen 2, jack 1, tens 10. Other cards have no value. If only one trump is played, it scores two for both high and low (3 if it is the jack). If both counts are equal, no point is awarded for game.

First player to gather seven points wins. If both players achieve this in the same hand, points are scored in the order of events above. If the dealer has six points and turns the jack, he wins.

All Fours Card Game Variations:

All Fives: In this two-player variant of All Fours card game points are scored for winning the following trumps in a trick: ten 10, five 5, ace 4, king 3, queen 2, jack 1. First to 61 points wins the game.

California Jack: In this two player game each player receives six cards, and the stock is placed face up, the top card denoting trumps. Winner of the first trick takes this card and his opponent the next. Play goes until all cards in the stock and hand are gone. Then each player goes through his trick pile and scores a point each for high (ace of trumps), low (two of trumps), jack of trumps, and for game. The goal is seven or ten points. All other rules are the same as All Fours.

Shasta Sam: This All Fours card game variant is played as California Jack but the stock is kept face down so the winner of each trick does not know what card he will draw. Trumps are decided by a single cut of the pack.
